DUWO and Vastgoed Service switch to circular sanitary systems via Mastermate

Published on: 22 September, 2023

Good news: through Cirkelstad partner Mastermate, DUWO and Vastgoed Service, the maintenance partner of the student housing provider, have decided to only install circular sanitary systems in their daily maintenance. Jaël Voskamp from Mastermate explains.

“Of course, with large building materials, there is significant environmental gain in new construction. However, the first steps towards CO2 reduction can be taken more quickly and easily. Smaller building materials are often overlooked, even though renovation projects and daily maintenance offer a lot of potential to reuse valuable raw materials.”

“It’s a feasible step to start by reducing your own CO2 emissions. Housing corporations have the choice to use sustainable and responsible products in both daily maintenance and renovation projects.” And with positive results.

By choosing circular sinks and toilets, Vastgoed Service already saves about 75% CO2 emissions per installed product compared to a new product (CE Delft, 2022). Moreover, the products are prepared for reuse in collaboration with a sheltered workshop, contributing to the company’s SROI.

“Before the technicians started working with the circular products supplied by Mastermate, they received a Toolbox Circularity from Mastermate. It’s important to involve everyone in this story – especially the technicians, so they can effectively communicate it to the residents.”

Frans Kern, director of Vastgoed Service, confirms that the use of circular materials is preferred: “Extending the lifespan of materials can significantly reduce our consumption of primary raw materials. By reusing a product, its value is maintained longer. Of course, the product must be suitable for a long lifespan and repairable. The user must also want to use the product for a long time. The trust between the user and the product is essential; it must retain its value.”

He adds: “At Vastgoed Service, we also work with recycled materials. Recently, together with DUWO Amsterdam in Hoofddorp, location Opaallaan, we reused materials. This aimed not only to prevent waste but also to support other residents (students) who are financially struggling. By giving away the collected items to these students, they can save on costs when furnishing their new homes, promoting a sustainable lifestyle.”
